St. Paul’s Hospital

St Pauls
Business Case
Demand for Emergency Department services at St. Paul’s Hospital increased significantly with the closing of two other local hospitals. Since it was difficult for St. Paul’s to obtain additional funding for ED services, the increased demand needed to be met with improved operational efficiency.

Reduced Time to Treatment in the ED

  • Reduced length of stay in the ED by 30 minutes for patients discharged from the ED

  • For patients presenting with level-3 abdominal pains, reduced time to physician assessment by 5 minutes and time to first Laboratory order by 15 minutes

  • Created an ED physician report card to track visits, average acuity, ED length of stay and treatment time by provider

  • Improved clinicians’ accuracy and effectiveness when prescribing infrequently utilized medications
